Belen's Nunez runs wild with 7 goals - Ransom's Simko nets 3.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. — The No. 15-ranked Brown University men’s water polo team defeated Austin College, 16-7, and fell to No. 5 University of the Pacific, 18-7, and No. 20 Bucknell University, 14-7, on the opening day of the Bruno Classic at the Katherine Moran Coleman Aquatics Center.
Between the three games, senior Santiago Nunez (Miami, Fla.) led the Bears with seven goals while sophomore Aidan Reilly (Los Angeles, Calif.) netted five goals. Sophomore Riad Hallal (Coronado, Calif.) and freshman Ugo Piovan (Vouliagmeni, Greece) combined to make 23 saves on the day.
Against Austin, Nunez and freshman Matt Simko (Fr., Coral Gables, Fla.) each scored a hat trick in the team’s home opener.
 
The Bears built an 8-2 halftime lead en route to their victory over the Kangaroos – a team playing in its first game as a varsity program.
 
Nunez and Simko led the Bears with three goals apiece, while junior Armen Deirmenjian (Beverly Hills, Calif.) and Reilly each netted two goals. Reilly added three steals, and Deirmenjian made two steals.
 
Six other Bears scored one goal each – seniors Travis Bouscaren (Cambridge, Mass.) and Spencer Carroll (Newport Beach, Calif.), junior Hudson Rawlings (Murrieta, Calif.) and freshmen Niko Bhatia (Los Altos, Calif.)Andrew Penner (Atherton, Calif.) and Stephen Salle (Chadds Ford, Pa.).
 
Carroll dished out a team-high four assists with two steals, while Bouscaren tallied two assists and two steals. Bhatia distributed two assists and junior Will Collier (Darien, Conn.) totaled two assists and three steals.
 
Juniors James Thygesen (Menlo Park, Calif.) and Galen Hu (Colleyville, Texas) each chipped in two assists, and Salle, Penner and sophomore Daniel Hu (Colleyville, Texas) posted two steals apiece.
 
In the cage, Hallal made seven saves in the first half, Piovan stopped three shots in the second half.
 
Brown opened the game with a 3-0 lead behind a goal from Bouscaren and back-to-back tallies from Nunez. Simko closed the first quarter’s scoring to give the Bears a 4-1 edge at the end of one.
 
After Austin initiated the second quarter’s scoring, the Bears netted the period’s remaining four goals to bring an 8-2 advantage into the break. Carroll, Bhatia, Deirmenjian and Penner scored on the run, in order.
 
Simko gave Brown a 9-2 lead early in the third quarter with a 6-on-5 goal before the Kangaroos pulled within 9-4. Markers from Nunez, Deirmenjian, Rawlings and Reilly kept the hosts up 13-6 at the end of the stanza.
 
The Bears outscored the visitors 3-1 in the final frame behind goals from Simko, Salle and Reilly.
  
Facing Pacific, Carroll and Nunez each netted two goals.
 
The Bears remained within 10-5 late in the third quarter before the visiting Tigers – playing in their season opener – closed the game on an 8-2 run.
 
Carroll and Nunez each dished out two assists alongside their two goals, and Carroll came up with three steals.
 
Deirmenjian posted a goal and two ejections drawn, while Rawlings and Reilly each tallied one goal. Simko drew a team-high three ejections.
 
Piovan totaled nine saves and two steals.
 
Brown and Pacific stood tied at 2-2 midway through the first quarter after Carroll and Deirmenjian each scored once in the opening four minutes. The Tigers netted the quarter’s final four goals to gain a 6-2 edge at the end of one.
 
In the second quarter, goals from Reilly and Nunez kept the margin at 8-4 before Pacific notched the half’s final marker to take a 9-4 lead into the break.
 
Following a Pacific goal to open the second half, Carroll scored from five meters off a pass from Nunez to make the score 10-5 with 2:53 to play in the period. The visitors then scored the final three goals of the third quarter and the first two goals of the final frame to pull ahead 15-5 with 3:58 to play.
 
Rawlings stopped the run with a 6-on-5 goal before Nunez netted a goal from five meters to trim the deficit to 15-7 with 2:53 left. The Tigers scored the contest’s last three goals, including a marker on a 5-meter penalty shot.
 
In the final game of the day for the Bears, Nunez and Reilly each posted two goals versus Bucknell.
 
The Bears and Bison stood tied 2-2 at the end of the first quarter before the visitors outscored the hosts 10-3 over the next two quarters to bring a 12-5 edge into the final frame.
 
Alongside Nunez and Reilly, Bouscaren, Thygesen and Salle netted one goal apiece.
 
Bouscaren came up with three steals, Rawlings drew three ejections and Deirmenjian made two steals. Hallal blocked four shots.
 
Nunez opened the game’s scoring just over a minute into the contest, and Thygesen gave Brown back a 2-1 lead with a 6-on-5 goal later in the period. The Bison scored the last goal of the first quarter and netted the first five goals of the second stanza to pull ahead 7-2.
 
A goal from Reilly with 23 seconds left in the half brought Brown within 7-3 at the intermission before the Bison netted the first three goals of the second half to extend their margin to 10-3. Bouscaren trimmed the score to 10-4 with a one-timed goal prior to the visitors netting two more goals to go ahead 12-4.
 
Reilly converted a 5-meter penalty shot to close the third quarter’s scoring and cut the deficit to 12-5. Nunez and Salle each scored a goal in the fourth.
