Cody Jones Scores Twice - St. Francis Rolls IONA



BROOKLYN HEIGHTS, NY — The St. Francis Brooklyn men’s water polo team took down Iona College, 17-7, in its home opener at the SFC Aquatic Center. The win also marks the Terriers’ first overall victory and Northeast Water Polo Conference (NWPC) win of the season.
The Terriers jumped out to an early lead and never looked back as they led wire-to-wire en route to their first triumph of the season. The 17 goals were the most by St. Francis Brooklyn this season and the most since it tallied 22 goals against Salem International on September 17, 2016.
Junior attacker Matheus Santos led the Terriers’ offense with a season-high five goals. He opened up the scoring for St. Francis Brooklyn, finding the back of the net at the 5:23 mark in the first period. Santos recorded a hat trick in the fourth period alone as he found the back of the net three times in a three-minute span. The junior attempted eight shots and notched two steals.
Junior driver Boris Posavec registered a hat trick for the Terriers. His three goals were a season-high.
A total of four Terriers scored two goals. Senior attacker Botond Kadar led the team with six points (two goals, four assists). The two goals and four assists were both season-highs for Kadar.
Freshman defender Djorde Stanic rattled the back of the cage twice and dished out three assists, while junior attacker William Lapkin scored two goals, notched an assist, and recorded a team-high three steals. Freshman driver Cody-Alexander Jones (South Broward High, Hollywood, Fl.) also scored twice. One of his two goals came on a five-meter penalty shot with 29 seconds to play in the third period.
Since 2005 St. Francis Brooklyn is 23-0 against Iona.
