Navy Splits Pair of Games on Final Day of Bison Invitational




Navy fell to Wagner, 8-6, but defeated Mercyhurst, 16-9, to improve to 6-4 overall

LEWISBURG, Pa. The Navy water polo team (6-4, 0-1 MAWPC) split a pair of games on the final day of the 2018 Bison Invitational hosted by Bucknell at Kinney Natatorium in Lewisburg, Pa. The Mids fell to Wagner (5-4) in the first Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference game of the season, 8-6. In the second game of the doubleheader, the Midshipmen posted a 16-9 win over Mercyhurst (7-3).
 
"Today was a good day for the team," head coach Luis Nicolao said. "Against Wagner, we didn't get the W, but we played one of the best games that we have played so far this season. Against Mercyhurst, we were able to pick up the win and finish the weekend 3-1. This was a great tournament for us to build some confidence as we move into the conference season."
 
Navy had 12 players score on the day. Freshman Isaac Salinas (Spring City, Pa.) led the way with six points, scoring two goals and chipping in a team-best four assists. Nate Reiff (Wheeling, Ill. – 2g 3a) chipped in five points, while Trevor Clark(San Marcos, Calif.) led the Mids with four goals for his four points on the day. Jake Haines (Ashburn, Va.) scored a pair of goals with an assist for three points.
 
The Midshipmen used a pair of goalies on the day. Ronan Williams (Severna Park, Md.) worked a complete game against MAWPC opponent Wagner, surrendering eight goals, while notching nine saves. Freshman Max Sandberg (Newport Beach, Calif.) worked the second game, marking his first official start. He surrendered nine goals in the victory, while making five stops.
 
Navy returns to action next weekend with a pair of conference road games. The Mids take on La Salle on Saturday, Sept. 22 at 5:00 p.m. in Philadelphia, before traveling to the Bronx, N.Y. to play Fordham on Sunday, Sept. 23 at 3:00 p.m.
 
Game 1 Recap – Wagner 8, Navy 6
In the first game, the Midshipmen posted one of their most solid performances of the season. Salinas opened the scoring to give Navy an early 1-0 advantage. The Seahawks answered with a goal, but the Mids regained the lead with a goal by Reiff. Wagner tied the game to end the first quarter and took its first lead of the game early in the second stanza. Clark's first goal of the day knotted the score at 3-3, but the Seahawks would go into halftime with a 4-3 edge.
 
In the second half, Crawford Smith (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) tied the score at four, but back-to-back goals by Wagner pushed the advantage to 6-4. Bobby Lee (Santa Ana, Calif.) cut the deficit to 6-5 to end the third quarter. Salinas found the back of the net for the second time to tie the score at six in fourth quarter. Wagner scored the final two goals of the game to claim the 8-6 victory.
 
Game 2 Recap – Navy 16, Mercyhurst 9
The second game of the day, Navy found itself in an offensive explosion against Mercyhurst with 10 different players finding the back of the net for the Mids. Trailing 1-0, the Mids responded with a 3-0 run to take the lead. Reiff, William Lowdon(Hillsborough, Calif.), and Clark each scored to give Navy the advantage. The Lakers knotted the score at 3-3, but a second 3-0 run by the Mids closed out the first quarter. Jesse Hainze (Bellevue, Wash.), Haines, and Kevin Volkov (Freehold, N.J.) reclaimed the lead, 6-3, through one quarter of play. In the second quarter, Navy edged Mercyhurst, 4-3 to take a 10-6 advantage into halftime. On the run, Shashin and Reiff traded goals with the Lakers in the first half of the period. Volkov and Hainze scored goals around a Mercyhurst goal to go into halftime in front 10-6.
 
Clark opened up scoring in the third quarter to push the lead to 11-6. Following a Laker goal, Haines extended the advantage back to five goals with his second score of the game. Mercyhurst scored to start the fourth, but Clark, Jacobs, and Smith rattled off three straight goals to push the Navy lead to 15-8. After a Laker goal, Jason Dompke (Huntington Beach, Calif.) scored to provide the final margin, 16-9.
