Navy Set for Three MAWPC Games This Weekend






Navy plays La Salle (Friday, 7 p.m.), at Johns Hopkins (Saturday, 10 a.m.), and No. 15 Bucknell (Saturday, 7 p.m., Lejeune Hall).


ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Navy water polo team (8-4) is slated for three Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference games this weekend. The Mids host La Salle (2-11) on Friday night at 7:00 p.m. at Scott Natatorium. On Saturday, Navy travels to Baltimore to take on John Hopkins (3-3) at 10:00 a.m. before returning to Annapolis to play No. 15 Bucknell (8-1) in Lejeune Hall at 7:00 p.m. The game between the Midshipmen and the Bison will be live streamed on Patriot League Network.
 
Players to Watch
Freshman Isaac Salinas (Spring City, Pa.) and sophomore Bobby Lee (Santa Ana, Calif.) have emerged as offensive leaders for the Midshipmen. Salinas leads the team with 39 total point, netting 22 goals with a team-best 17 assists. His 22 goals are behind only Lee, who leads the team with 30 goals and is second on the squad with 34 total points. Defensively, Andrew Shashin (Buffalo Grove, Ill.) leads the team with 29 ejections drawn and Jake Haines (Ashburn, Va.) paces the team with 11 steals. Ronan Williams (Severna Park, Md.) has played in 10 out of 12 games at goalie, notching a team-high 84 saves and a team-best 52.8 save percentage.
 
Last Time Out
Navy finished the weekend 2-0 after posting a 9-8 victory over Fordham on Sunday afternoon at Col. Francis B. Messmore Aquatic Center in the Bronx, N.Y. With the win and a victory over La Salle on Saturday, the Midshipmen improve to 8-4 overall and 2-1 in the Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference.
 
The Mids were once again led by Isaac Salinas (Spring City, Pa.) and Bobby Lee (Santa Ana, Calif.) Salinas paced the offense with a team-high four points (3g 1a), while Lee followed with three goals for his second hat trick of the weekend. Trevor Clark (San Marcos, Calif.), Cole Jacobs (Naperville, Ill.), and Crawford Smith (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) each added goals in the game.
 
Ronan Williams (Severna Park, Md.) came up big for the Midshipmen at goal. The junior limited the Rams to under 10 goals, while boasting 11 saves in the game. It is the second time this season that Williams has notched double-digit saves against Fordham. He finished with 15 stops against the Rams at the Navy Open the first weekend of the season. Williams is averaging 13 saves per game against Fordham this season.
 
Last Time vs. La Salle (W, 15-10 – Sept. 22, 2018)
Navy picked up its first Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference win of the season on Saturday afternoon with a 15-10 victory at La Salle at Kirk Pool in Philadelphia, Pa.
 
The Mids received an outstanding offensive performance from sophomore Bobby Lee (Santa Ana, Calif.) and freshman Isaac Salinas (Spring City, Pa.). The duo each finished the game with five goals apiece. Lee also added an assist, while Salinas chipped in a team-high two helpers. Andrew Shashin (Buffalo Grove, Ill.) netted a pair of goals, while Crawford Smith (Mechanicsburg, Pa.), Nate Reiff (Wheeling, Ill.), and Cole Jacobs (Naperville, Ill.) rounded out the scoring.
 
Defensively, Ronan Williams (Severna Park, Md.) and Max Sandberg (Newport Beach, Calif.) split time at goal. Williams led the way with five saves with Sandberg adding three stops. Shashin had a team-high eight ejections drawn on the day, while Jake Haines (Ashburn, Va.) boasted a team-best two steals.
 
Last Time vs. Johns Hopkins (W, 9-5 – Nov. 19, 2017)
Navy closed out the 2017 season with a 9-5 victory over Johns Hopkins in the fifth-place game of the Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference Championship tournament on Sunday morning at Lejeune Hall.
 
Goalkeeper Francis Kim (Houston, Texas) was named Player of the Game, posting 13 saves in the victory. For Kim, it was the third consecutive game of the MAWPC Tournament with double digit saves. The junior kept the Blue Jays scoreless in the first quarter and allowed only two first half goals en route to the victory. The Navy defense assisted Kim throughout the game, disrupting the Hopkins offense, leading to 14 JHU turnovers.
 
Offensively, eight different players combined to score the Mids' nine goals. Senior Ian Bagent (Norcross, Ga.) led the charge with a pair of goals, while Taylor Bernhardt (Annapolis, Md.), Gabe Gaspar (Pittsburg, Pa.), Jake Haines (Ashburn, Va.), Nate Reiff (Wheeling, Ill.), Matt Skowronski (Oak Hill, Va.), Crawford Smith (Mechanicsburg, Pa.), and Kevin Volkov(Freehold, N.J.) each scored goals in the game.
 
Last Time vs. Bucknell (L, 12-6 – Oct. 28, 2017)
Navy dropped a 12-6 decision on the road to No. 17 Bucknell on Saturday evening at Kinney Natatorium in Lewisburg, Pa. The Mids were unable to match the nationally-ranked Bison's offensive output.
 
The Mids saw five players combine to score six goals. Bobby Lee (Santa Ana, Calif.) led the charge for the Midshipmen, netting a pair of goals, increasing his team-lead in goals to 27 on the year. B. Lee was joined by Jared Castillo (League City, Texas), William Lowdon (Hillsborough, Calif.), Crawford Smith (Mechanicsburg, Pa.), and senior captain Matt Skowronski(Oak Hill, Va.) with goals on the night.
 
Francis Kim (Houston, Texas) and Ronan Williams (Severna Park, Md.) split time between the post for the Midshipmen. Kim finished the game with nine saves, but surrendered eight goals, while Williams allowed four goals, making three stops.
