JOHNSON HELPS U.S. EARN FINA WORLD CUP




SURGUT, Russia – Led by Ashleigh Johnson the United States Women's Water Polo team earned its third straight FINA World Cup title, dropping the host country, Russia, 8-5 on Sunday.
 
Johnson made 11 saves in the championship match and selected as the tournament's top goalkeeper. The United States did not lose in World Cup and is currently on a 26-match winning streak.
 
Johnson and the national squad opened up group play with a victory over New Zealand, 18-2. The former Tiger picked up 13 stops in that contest. After dominating South Africa, 26-1, the United States defeated Canada in the final group meeting, 17-3. Johnson made 18 saves in that game.
 
Following a 15-5 decision in the quarterfinals (Johnson did not play), the national team dropped Spain, 11-5, in the semifinals, while Johnson made 10 saves.
 
One of the greatest athletes in Princeton history, Johnson won the C. Otto von Kienbusch and Cutino Awards during her senior season in 2017. She was the first player in Princeton women's water polo history to be named first team All-America and third ever to be picked as All-American in each of her four seasons.
 
Johnson finished her Princeton career with a 100-17 record, along with a school-record 1,362 saves and a .693 save percentage. She was a 19-time Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Defensive Player of the Week award winner, a four-time first-team all-conference player and the CWPA Player of the Year.
