STA Alum Goldenberg Scores As Bruins Roll





LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- No. 2 UCLA improved to 11-0 on the year with a 14-8 win over Loyola Marymount on Saturday afternoon at Dirks Pool at Spieker Aquatics Center. The Bruins improved to 30-0 all-time against the Lions while LMU dropped to 2-5 on the year.

The Bruins were led by freshman Jake Cavano who scored a total of nine goals in the two games today, including four against LMU. Redshirt junior Raphael Raede had a hat trick and senior Austin Rone picked up two scores on two shots for the Bruins. Redshirt junior Alex Wolf got the start in the cage and shut out the Lions while making five saves. Freshman Danny Roland played the second and third quarters in goal and was credited with four saves while allowing five goals. Redshirt junior Jonathan Van De Velde played the fourth period in the cage and registered two saves while surrendering three scores.

UCLA won the first period 3-0. Sophomore Evan Rosenfeld (7:33) and Cavano (3:20) scored goals from the front court while rone scored his first of the game off a rebound shot from the front court (1:43).

After LMU cut it to 3-1 with a goal to open the scoring in the second quarter (6:31), the Bruins reeled off five straight goals. Cavano scored his second on a power play (3:18) to push the lead to 4-1. Rone then scored his second from the front court (1:08) to give the Bruins a 5-1 lead at the break.

The third quarter was all offense as the Bruins outscored the Lions 6-4 in the period. Raede scored back-to-back goals (5:45 - two meters; 5:20 - counter) to extend the lead to 7-1. Freshman Ashworth Molthen scored his only goal of the game from the front court (4:27) to make it 8-1. After a goal from the Lions, Cavano completed his hat trick with a power play goal (3:41) and sophomore Quinten Osborne added a goal from two meters (2:56) to put the Bruins up 10-2. LMU would get back-to-back power play goals (2:14 and 1:22), but Cavano notched his fourth of the game on a shot from the front court (1:06) to make it 11-4. Blazo Mitrovic completed his hat trick for LMU from the front court (0:07) to end the scoring in the third with UCLA leading 11-5.

Both teams scored three goals in the final period. The Bruins got a goal from redshirt sophomore Peter Lovas after an ordinary foul (6:30) to open the scoring in the fourth. Redshirt junior Eric Goldenberg scored from the front court (4:10) and Raede completed his hat trick with a score from two meters (3:44) to make it 14-6 UCLA. The Lions got two power play goals from Alexandros Athymaritis (2:59 and 0:15) to provide the 14-8 final.
