No. 15 Brown Upsets No. 8 Pepperdine in Overtime Thriller




PROVIDENCE, R.I. – No. 15 Brown University men's water polo defeated No. 8 Pepperdine University in overtime, 12-11, and fell to No. 7 University of California, Davis, 18-6, on Sunday morning at the Katherine Moran Coleman Aquatics Center.
 
On the second and final day of the Bruno Classic, the Bears (2-3) pulled out a dramatic win over the Waves (2-1) in the only overtime contest of the tournament after dropping a decision to the Aggies (2-1).
 
Against the Waves, the Bears came back from a 10-9 deficit in overtime with junior Hudson Rawlings(Murrieta, Calif.) netting the game winning goal with one second to play in the second bonus session.
 
Rawlings and junior James Thygesen (Menlo Park, Calif.) led the Bears with four goals between the two games while senior Travis Bouscaren (Cambridge, Mass.) netted three goals against Pepperdine.
 
Next, Brown plays in four games at the Princeton Invitational with contests against Santa Clara (Sept. 8, 3:00 p.m.), No. 20 Wagner (Sept. 8, 8:00 p.m.), No. 1 UCLA (Sept. 9, 8:45 a.m.), and No. 20 Air Force (Sept. 9, 3:00 p.m.).
 
Game 1 – No. 7 UC Davis 18, No. 15 Brown 6
 
Juniors Hudson Rawlings and James Thygesen each netted two goals as No. 15 Brown fell to No. 7 UC Davis, 18-6, on Sunday morning in its first game of the day and fourth game at the Bruno Classic.
 
In the opening game of day two of the tournament, the Bears trailed 9-2 at the half, and the visiting Aggies extended their lead with six goals in the fourth quarter.
 
Rawlings (Murrieta, Calif.) and Thygesen (Menlo Park, Calif.) added one assist apiece alongside their two goals. Junior Armen Deirmenjian (Beverly Hills, Calif.) and freshman Niko Bhatia (Los Altos, Calif.) each scored one goal.
 
Senior Spencer Carroll (Newport Beach, Calif.), junior Will Collier (Darien, Conn.), and freshman Andrew Penner (Atherton, Calif.) each registered one assist. Rawlings and freshman Matt Simko (Coral Gables, Fla.) drew five and four ejections respectively.
 
In the cage, freshman goalie Ugo Piovan (Vouliagmeni, Greece) made eight saves.
 
After UC Davis posted the game's first two goals, Deirmenjian converted from beyond the 5-meter mark to bring Brown within 2-1. The Aggies led 3-1 at the end of the first quarter.
 
UCD netted the second quarter's first five goals to pull ahead 8-1. Rawlings stemmed the run, scoring on a backhanded shot off a feed from Thygesen. The Aggies scored the half's final goal to take a 9-2 edge at the break.
 
Bhatia opened the third quarter's scoring, finding the back of the net from the right wing off a feed from Collier. UCD answered with a 3-0 run, pulling ahead 12-3. Thygesen netted the frame's final two goals, converting on a 5-meter penalty shot drawn by Rawlings and finishing a 6-on-5 goal from the right wing off an assist from Carroll.
 
Holding a 12-5 lead at the start of the fourth quarter, UC Davis used a 5-0 run to open the final frame and claim a 17-5 advantage. Rawlings netted another backhanded shot off an assist from Penner before UCD closed the game's scoring with 19 seconds left.

Game 2 – No. 15 Brown 12, No. 8 Pepperdine 11 (OT)
 
Senior Travis Bouscaren scored a hat trick, and junior Hudson Rawlings netted the game-winning goal in overtime as No. 15 Brown bested No. 8 Pepperdine, 12-11, on Sunday morning in the Bears' second game of the day and fifth contest of the tournament.
 
Trailing 10-9 early in the first overtime period, the Bears outscored the Waves 3-1 over the rest of the bonus sessions, including the game winner from Rawlings (Murrieta, Calif.) with one second left in the second overtime period.
 
With the score tied at 6-6 in the fourth quarter, junior James Thygesen (Menlo Park, Calif.) and sophomore Aidan Reilly (Los Angeles, Calif.) scored back-to-back goals to put Brown up 8-6 with 5:09 to go in regulation. After Pepperdine knotted the score at 8-8, Rawlings put Brown back in front at the 1:38 mark before the Waves sent the game to OT tied at 9-9 with a goal with 40 seconds remaining.
 
The visitors opened the scoring in overtime prior to Thygesen converting to tie the score at 10-10 heading to the second overtime period. Carroll gave Brown an 11-10 lead early in OT2 before Pepperdine tied it again at 11-11 with 1:31 to go in the stanza. Rawlings netted the game winner with one second left, firing a shot into the left side of the goal off a quick restart.
 
Bouscaren (Cambridge, Mass.) led Brown with three goals while Rawlings tallied two goals and four ejections drawn. Junior Armen Deirmenjian (Beverly Hills, Calif.) tallied two goals, two assists, three steals, and three ejections drawn.
 
Thygesen posted two goals – one in the fourth quarter and one in overtime – alongside two assists. Senior Spencer Carroll (Newport Beach, Calif.) and Reilly each registered a goal and two assists.
 
Senior Santiago Nunez (Miami, Fla.) netted one goal, and freshman Niko Bhatia (Los Altos, Calif.) totaled two steals, two field blocks, and three ejections drawn. Sophomore goalkeeper Riad Hallal(Coronado, Calif.) made seven saves.
 
Brown opened the game with a 3-0 lead behind a pair of goals from Bouscaren and a marker from Nunez. The Bears remained ahead 3-1 at the end of the first quarter. A pair of goals from Deirmenjian offset two goals from the Waves in the second quarter as Brown maintained a 5-3 edge at halftime.
 
Bouscaren pushed Brown ahead 6-3 at the 3:35 mark of the third quarter before the Waves used a 3-0 run to tie the contest at 6-6 with 5:58 remaining in the fourth frame.
 
Back-to-back goals from Thygesen and Reilly pushed Brown ahead 8-6 with 5:09 to play in regulation before consecutive goals from Pepperdine tied it at 8-8 with 1:53 left. Rawlings followed with a goal before the Waves sent the game to overtime tied at 9-9.
 
After a Pepperdine tally opened overtime, Thygesen tied it at 10-10 with 1:07 left in the first extra stanza. In the second overtime, Carroll pushed Brown ahead 11-10 before Pepperdine drew even at 11-11 with 1:31 on the clock. Rawlings kept the game from going to a sudden victory period with his goal with one second left.
