UCLA Remains Undefeated Takes Out No. 8 UC Davis, 12-8




DAVIS, Calif. -- No. 2 UCLA improved to 15-0 on the year with a 12-8 win at No. 8 UC Davis on Sunday afternoon at Schaal Aquatics Center. The Bruins improved to 17-0 all-time against the Aggies as UC Davis dropped to 8-4 on the year.

The Bruins were led by five players with two goals apiece, which included freshmen Jake Cavano and Ashworth Molthen and sophomores Peter LovasFelix Brozyna-Vilim and Quinten Osborne. Redshirt junior Alex Wolf got the start in the cage and played the first three quarters, making six stops while allowing seven goals. True freshman Danny Roland came on in relief in the fourth period and made five saves while surrendering one goal.

Riley Venne got the Aggies on the board first with a power play goal (7:23) and then Colter Knight added an exclusion goal (4:44) to put UC Davis up 2-0. Sophomore Peter Lovas assisted Felix Brozyna-Vilim for the Bruins first goal (3:59). But UCD went up 3-1 on another power play goal (3:46), this time by Yurii Hanley. Lovas cut the Aggie lead to 3-2 when he converted a penalty shot (3:26). Freshman Jake Cavano ended the scoring in the first period (1:14) with a power play goal to tie it at 3-3.

Freshman Matthew Kacura set up senior David Stiling for a goal at even strength (4:54) to give the Bruins their first lead of the day at 4-3. Then sophomore Quinten Osborne extended his scoring streak to 16 games (dating back to last year's NCAA Championship game) with a goal (3:21) that gave UCLA a 5-3 advantage. Holden Tamblyn (2:58) cut the lead to 5-4 with a goal for the Aggies. But Cavano made a nice pass to senior Austin Rone who scored (2:29) to push the lead to 6-4. Keenan Anderson scored a goal at full strength (2:12) for the Aggies to trim the lead to 6-5. But freshman Ashworth Molthen converted on a penalty shot (0:40) to end the scoring in the period, giving UCLA a 7-5 lead at the break.

Venne opened the scoring in the third period for UC Davis (7:25) to cut the lead to 7-6. But Molthen delivered a nice feed to Brozyna-Vilim for his second score of the game (5:17) to extend the lead to 8-6. Then Lovas converted on the Bruins' third penalty shot of the game (4:43) to make it 9-6. Osborne added his second of the game on a power play assist from sophomore Nicolas Saveljic (2:12) to push the lead to 10-6. Nir Gross scored at even strength for UC Davis (0:24) to end the scoring in the period with the Bruins holding a 10-7 lead.

After Molthen was denied on a penalty shot, he scored the first goal of the final period from the front court (4:43) to push the lead to 11-7. Then Cavano added his second of the game from the front court (3:57) to give the Bruins their largest lead of the game at 12-7. Gross added his second of the game (2:21) to provide the 12-8 final.

The Bruins return to action on Saturday, Oct. 6 when they host San Jose State at 1:00 p.m. PT and Golden West  in an exhibition game at 3:00 p.m. PT at Dirks Pool at Spieker Aquatics Center.
