Simko Scores As Brown Takes Two




NO. 16 BROWN UNIVERSITY MAULS NO. 18 LOYOLA MARYMOUNT UNIVERSITY 13-12 & FRESNO PACIFIC UNIVERSITY 12-7 / FRASER MEMORIAL TOURNAMENT


SARATOGA/SANTA CLARA, Calif. — No. 16-ranked Brown University men’s water polo recorded a pair of wins at the Julian Fraser Memorial Tournament hosted by Santa Clara University as the Bears topped No. 18 Loyola Marymount University, 13-12, and Fresno Pacific University, 12-7, at West Valley College and Santa Clara’s Sullivan Aquatic Center, respectively.
Brown showcased a balanced offense on the day with eight different Brown student-athletes posting a multi-goal game between the two contests. Freshman Stephen Salle (Chadds Ford, Pa.) scored four goals against LMU, while senior Travis Bouscaren (Cambridge, Mass.), junior Hudson Rawlings (Murrieta, Calif.) and sophomores Adam Fuller (Santa Barbara, Calif.) and Aidan Reilly (Los Angeles, Calif.) each netted three goals on the day.
In the cage, freshman goalkeeper Ugo Piovan (Vouliagmeni, Greece) totaled 21 saves between the two matches, including 15 stops versus Fresno Pacific.
Facing Loyola Marymount, Salle scored four goals as picked up a one-goal win at West Valley College’s WVC Aquatic Center.
In their first game of the day and second overall contest at the Julian Fraser Memorial Tournament, the Bears did not trail in the second half and outscored the Lions, 3-2, inside of the final four minutes to pull out the win in a game that witnessed seven ties.
Salle led the Bears with his quartet of goals while Rawlings contributed two goals, three assists, and four ejections drawn. Bouscaren compiled two goals, two assists, and a steal.
Fuller netted two goals,Reilly posted a goal and two assists and junior James Thygesen (Menlo Park, Calif.) chipped in a goal and an assist.
Freshman Andrew Penner (Atherton, Calif.) scored a goal, junior Armen Deirmenjian (Beverly Hills, Calif.) handed out three assists and senior Spencer Carroll (Newport Beach, Calif.) made three steals.
Piovan blocked six shots to earn the win.
Bouscaren netted the Bears’ first goal after LMU notched the game’s first two tallies. The Lions held a 3-1 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Salle scored a pair of goals during a 3-0 run to open the second quarter – with Bouscaren accounting for the other marker – as Brown pulled ahead 4-3 with 1:39 to play in the half. The two sides went into halftime knotted at four-all.
Goals from Rawlings and Penner inside of the first three minutes of the third quarter allowed Brown to gain a 6-5 edge. Following a goal from Fuller and two tallies from LMU the two teams stood even at 7-7. Reilly and Salle answered with back-to-back goals to push Brown ahead 9-7 before Loyola Marymount cut the margin to 9-8 heading to the fourth quarter.
In the first four minutes of the final frame, Fuller scored once, and LMU scored twice to equalize at 10-10. Thygesen and Salle responded with consecutive goals to allow Brown to reclaim a 12-10 advantage with 2:52 to play. A Lions’ marker trimmed the lead to 12-11 at the 1:35 mark before Rawlings staked Brown to a 13-11 edge with 51 seconds left. LMU charted the contest’s final goal with 35 seconds remaining.
Against Fresno Pacific, four different Bears scored two goals and eight total Brown players found the back of the net at Santa Clara University’s Sullivan Aquatic Center.
Playing in their second game of the day and third contest at the Julian Fraser Memorial Tournament, the Bears held a 6-3 lead at halftime and outscored the Sunbirds, 6-4, in the second half to finish the day with a 2-0 record.
Reilly tallied two goals, three assists, and two steals while Deirmenjian notched two goals and an assist. Freshmen Niko Bhatia (Los Altos, Calif.) and Matt Simko (Ransom Everglades, Coral Gables, Fla.) netted two goals apiece with Simko drawing three ejections.
Bouscaren totaled a goal, two assists and two ejections drawn, and Rawlings posted a goal, an assist and two ejections drawn.
Fuller and Penner chipped in one goal each, and Thygesen dished out two assists.
In the cage, Piovan made 15 saves, including eight stops in the second half, with two steals and an assist.
After FPU scored the game’s first goal, Bouscaren and Reilly responded with back-to-back goals to give Brown a 2-1 lead. The two teams stood tied at 2-2 at the end of the first quarter.
Following a Sunbird marker to open the second stanza, the Bears closed the half on a 4-0 run, taking a 6-3 advantage at halftime. Rawlings initiated the streak, Simko followed with consecutive goals and Deirmenjian closed the burst.
The Sunbirds netted the second half’s first marker, but Brown countered with goals from Fuller and Reilly to move ahead 8-4 entering the fourth quarter.
In the final frame, a goal from Penner earlier in the period helped the Bears maintain a 9-6 edge. Brown then notched three unanswered goals to pull ahead 12-6 with 1:48 to play as a pair of Bhatia goals bookended a tally from Deirmenjian. FPU scored the contest’s final goal with 1:37 left.
