PALO ALTO, CALIF. — With freshman Hannes Daube serving up six goals for the Trojan cause, the No. 1 USC men's water polo team dug out of a five-goal hole and was within one of No. 3 host Stanford before the Cardinal managed a last-minute goal to secure a 13-11 upset of the visiting Trojans today in Palo Alto. The loss is USC's first of the year, moving the Trojans to 17-1 overall with an 0-1 start to MPSF play. Stanford improves to 9-0 and to 1-0 in MPSF action.
In a game that was peppered by exclusion whistles, both teams were clicking off advantage goals throughout. The high-scoring affair opened as a back-and-forth battle, as the hosts took the first lead only to see USC answer right back. Matt Maier, Jacob Mercep and Hannes Daube each had equalizers in the first frame before the Cardinal managed a three-goal surge. Barely two minutes into the second period, USC was in a 6-4 hold before Daube hit Mercep for a ripper to break up the Trojans' scoring slump. Stanford struck again to make it 7-4, and then USC generated back-to-back goals for the first time in the half. Zach D'Sa fed Daube for the freshman's second of the game, and then after a Maier field block squashed a Stanford attack, Marko Vavic set up Mercep for his third of the half to tug USC within one, down 7-6 entering the final minute of the first half. Stanford would pad its lead back to two with a score with 20 ticks to go, making it an 8-6 Cardinal halftime advantage.
In the third, Stanford ballooned its lead in wrapping four goals around a single USC goal from the hands of Sawyer Rhodes. The Cardinal jumped to a five-goal lead with another 6-on-5 finish to go up 12-7 with 3:03 on the clock. USC switched back its goalies at that point, bringing first-half goalie Nic Porter back into the cage for the final stretch, spelling Sam Krutonog who had checked in at halftime. Another Maier field block put a stop to a dangerous Stanford 6-on-4 chance, and then USC got another big boost from Daube at the other end. Again, Vavic would find his fellow Team USA teammate Daube, with the freshman drilling his third to make it 12-8 at the end of the third period. In the fourth, USC made its move. The Daube-fueled onslaught saw the Trojans carve down its deficit and make it a one-goal game with 1:46 to go. Daube would account for all three of those goals, scoring off the foul early in the fourth, then finished a 6-on-5 off a setup from Marin Dasic, and then topping off his six-goal day with a 5-meter penalty shot earned by Sam Slobodien. Daube's hot hand had carried USC to within one goal, trailing Stanford 12-11 with under two minutes to go. An offensive foul would stymie USC's next look to level it, and Stanford would net a crucial goal with 31 seconds remaining to make it a 13-11 lead and dash USC's hopes of forcing overtime.
USC now heads back to home waters to host No. 16 San José State in a 12 p.m. clash tomorrow (Oct. 7) at Uytengsu Aquatics Center for a chance to start up another Trojan win streak in 2018.
