Lindenwood Men’s Water Polo Sweeps Four Games at Conference Meet




Lindenwood's men's water polo swept four games at the second Missouri Valley Division Conference Crossover meet September 29-30 at the Simon Rec Center in St. Louis, Missouri.  The Lions defeated the University of Missouri 26-2 and Missouri S & T 26-1 on Saturday, then stopped Saint Louis University 22-3 and McKendree 22-12 on Sunday.

In the first game of the weekend for Lindenwood against the Tigers, the Lions scored 11 goals in the first quarter and never looked back.  Jorge Oliveros led the offense with six goals, followed by Vuk Budrak with four.  Branislav Stojiljkovic and Sean Welch each scored three times in the match.  Eduardo Ariste was the assist leader for the team with five, followed by Jamie Gambin with four.  Ariste and Budrak paced the defense with four steals each while Anthony Coppin made one save in goal and Jack Haselhorstmade four.

It was a repeat performance in the second game on Saturday against the Miners with Lindenwood jumping out to an 8-0 advantage after the first quarter and extending it to a 12 point lead at halftime before adding seven markers in each of the final two frames.  Gambin and Stojiljkovic each scored five, followed by Budrak with four, with Oliveros and Simon Everts each scoring three.  Pol Sandoval assisted on four goals to lead the Lions, followed by Gambin and Ariste with three each.  Curro Cassado and Koal Robson helped the defense with three steals each.  A trio of players spent time in goal, led by Haselhorst with six saves.  Coppin stopped three shots and Lance Clarkstopped one.

Against the Billikens on Sunday, Lindenwood led 6-1 after the first quarter and 12-1 at halftime.  The advantage stretched to 20-2 at the end of three before a defensive fourth quarter.  Gambin led the offense with five goals while Stojiljkovic, Welch, and Simon Everts added three markers each.  Budrak earned three helpers with four others each getting two assists.  Defensively, Gambin led the Lions with five steals while Budrak added three.  Clark played the first quarter and made seven saves, Haselhorst played the second and fourth and stopped four shots, and Coppin played the third quarter and made two saves.

Lindenwood faced its toughest competition in the final game against the Bearcats, but still controlled play throughout, jumping to a 7-1 lead by the end of the first quarter.  McKendree stayed in the contest with four goals in the second to only trail 9-5 at halftime, but the Lions pulled away from there with nine markers in the third and another four in the fourth.  Gambin led the team in goals with six, assists with seven, and steals with four.  Haselhorst added five goals while Clark and Budrak each scored four times.  Once again, Lindenwood played three goalies during the game.  Haselhorst was in goal for two quarters and stopped seven shots while Clark and Coppin each played a single quarter and made four saves each.

With the four victories, the Lions improved to 11-3-1 overall and 7-0 in conference play.  Lindenwood travels to Los Angeles October 4-7 for the Southern California Convergence.  A final schedule for the event is still pending.
 
In other action at the crossover, it was a four-game sweep for the Lindenwood Gold squad as well.  The Lions defeated Washington University 17-11 and McKendree 12-5 on Saturday, then stopped Missouri 26-3 and Saint Louis University 19-9 on Sunday. 

Andreja Babic and Colt Correa paced the offense for Lindenwood against the Bears with seven goals each while Marino Chorro helped with four assists and five steals.  Correa also made seven saves in goal while Hunter Basnight made three in shared action.

In the contest against the Bearcats, Correa led the Lions with five goals and also made 11 saves in goal.  Babic helped on four markers and also added four steals, along with Nikola Nasev.

Against the Tigers, Babic scored seven times to lead Lindenwood, Guillermo Aguirre helped with five assists, and Andres Miranda had four steals.  Correa added another 10 saves to his stat sheet while Basnight made two saves in a quarter of work.

In the final match of the weekend for the Gold squad, Basnight scored six times to lead the Lions.  Miranda, Viktor Nagy, and Benedek Horcath each had three assists.  Correa stopped eight shots while Basnight stopped seven.
