CONNECTICUT COLLEGE SLIPS VERSUS DIVISION III NO. 3 WHITTIER COLLEGE, 20-5, & DIVISION III NO. 10 OCCIDENTAL COLLEGE, 15-10,

Freitas-Clemente scores for The Camels.

CLAREMONT/LA VERNE, Calif. — The Connecticut College men’s water polo team was defeated in a pair of matches against Division III No. 3 Whittier College, 20-5, at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges and Division III No. 10 Occidental College, 15-10, at the University of La Verne to close out play at the Gary Troyer Tournament.
Against Whittier, the Poets overwhelmed the Camels by netting the first seven goals and bursting out to a 15-1 lead in the early stages of the third quarter. Connecticut College finished stronger with balanced scoring, but the early deficit was too much to overcome.
Freshman Lucas Verrilli (Evanston, Ill.) paced the Camels by providing one goal and one assist along with a team-leading three steals, while classmate Danny Meisel (Santa Cruz, Calif.) made four saves between the posts in a relief effort.
Connecticut College was more competitive in its second match of the day against Occidental, but the team got off to a slow start by allowing the first five goals of the match. Junior Arturo Freitas (Weston, Fla.) scored the team’s first goal at the 7:39 mark of the second quarter, and the squad pulled within two when freshman Mike Gertsik (Brooklyn, N.Y.) found the back of the net on a power play to make it 6-4 with 2:23 on the clock in the frame. However, the Tigers answered with two straight goals to take an 8-4 lead at the break and never looked back.
Gertsik registered a hat trick, and senior Jake Smith (Sr., Baltimore, Md./Gilman School) added two steals on the defensive side of the ball. Sophomore Tanner Michaelis (Ramona, Calif.) made 10 saves to keep the Camels within striking distance.
