LOS ANGELES -- No. 2 UCLA improved to 16-0 on the year with an 11-8 win over No. 16 San Jose State on Saturday afternoon at Dirks Pool at Spieker Aquatics Center. The Bruins improved to 12-1 all-time against the Spartans as SJSU dropped to 4-6 on the year.
The Bruins were led by four players with two goals apiece, which included freshman Ashworth Molthen, sophomore Felix Brozyna-Vilim and seniors Warren Snyder and Austin Rone. Redshirt junior Alex Wolf got the start in the cage and played all but the final 1:29 of the fourth quarter, making 10 stops while allowing six goals. Redshirt junior Jonathan Van De Velde played the final 1:29, surrendering two goals.
Marc Weber got the Spartans on the board first (5:23) with a power play goal. Then Wolf set up senior Austin Rone for a score on a counter (4:25) to tie the game at 1-1. UCLA took the lead for good when sophomore Chasen Travisano set up senior Warren Snyder for a score on a power play with a one-timer. Then Wolf earned his second assist, setting up freshman Ashworth Molthen for another score on a counter (1:23) that ended the scoring in the first with the Bruins leading 3-1.
San Jose State doubled up the Bruins in the second quarter, 4-2. The Spartans' Adam Bado cut the lead to 3-2 with a lob shot (5:34). Then Snyder scored his second of the game on a counter (3:38) that extended the lead to 4-2. Weber then added a power play goal (2:14), his second of the game, to cut the lead to 4-3. Seanan McManus tied the game at 4-4 with a shot from the front court (1:30). Sophomore Evan Rosenfeld made a nice pass to sophomore Felix Brozyna-Vilim (0:27) who scored to put UCLA back in front, 5-4. But Weber completed his hat trick at the buzzer for the Spartans to tie the game at 5-5 at the break.
Freshman Jake Cavano made it eight straight games with a goal to open the scoring in the third with a strike from the front court (7:18). Molthen then set up Rone for his second score of the game (5:27) that put UCLA in front, 7-5. Neil Arnett responded for SJSU with a goal from the front court (4:22) to cut the lead to 7-6. But the Bruins ended the period with back-to-back goals to take a 9-6 lead into the final period. Rone set up Molthen for his second goal of the game (3:54) and Molthen had an assist to sophomore Quinten Osborne for his first of the game (1:50) from two meters.
Rone earned another assist as Brozyna-Vilim scored from set (7:11) to push the lead to 10-6. Travisano then scored his first goal of the game from the front court (5:19) to make it 11-6. McManus scored his second of the game for the Spartans (2:53) on a power play to cut it to 11-7. Weber would add his fourth of the game on a power play, beating the final buzzer to provide the 11-8 final score.
The Bruins return to action later today when they host Golden West College in an exhibition game at 3:00 p.m. PT at Dirks Pool at Spieker Aquatics Center.
