In the wake of Hurricane Michael, the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) announces a format change for the Men’s Collegiate Club Florida Division and the final seeding for the division championship tournament slated for Saturday-Sunday, October 27-28, hosted by Florida Atlantic University at Pompano Beach Aquatics Center in Pompano Beach, Fla.
Following the cancellation of the October 13-14 tournament at Florida State University due to Hurricane Michael, the league membership elected to not contest a second regular season weekend and subsequently seed the championship based exclusively on the outcome of games from the September 22-23 event at the University of Florida.
Due to the teams not playing a complete round-robin, the championship is seeded based on win-loss records and tiebreakers.
As the University of Florida “A” and the University of Central Florida “A’ both finished 4-0 during the lone weekend of regular season action, a tiebreaker is necessary to determine the No. 1 seed. Florida “A” claims the top spot due to goal differential versus the only common opponent with UCF “A” – Florida State – as Florida “A” defeated FSU 21-6 for a +15 goal differential, compared to UCF “A” which defeated FSU 11-8 for a +3.
The No. 3-4 seeds are slotted based on win-loss records as Florida Atlantic (3-1) and the University of Miami (2-2) take the spots. The University of Central Florida “B” takes the No. 8 seed with an 0-4 mark.
Another tiebreaker is necessary to determine positions No. 5-7 as Florida State, the University of South Florida and the University of Florida “B” all finished with 1-3 records. The spots are determined by a combination of goal differential and head-to-head results.
Since Florida State defeated the USF by an 18-13 score and holds a goal differential advantage versus Florida “B” comparing common opponents (UCF “A’ 11, FSU 8; University of Miami 13, FSU 12 = -4; UCF “A” 16, Florida “B” 6; Miami 14, Florida “B” 5 = -19), Florida State claims the No. 5 seed. The No. 6 seed is determined by comparing South Florida and Florida “B” against their only common opponent – the University of Central Florida “B”. As South Florida won 15-4 compared to Florida “B” which won 13-9 versus UCF “B”, South Florida takes the No. 6 seed.
