Navy Dominates La Salle, 19-3, to Extend Win Streak to Four

Fourteen different Mids scored goals in the game to extend Navy's win streak to four games.

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – For the third time this season, the Navy water polo team (9-4, 3-1 MAWPC) defeated La Salle (2-12, 0-5 MAWPC), routing the Explorers, 19-3, on Friday night at Scott Natatorium in Annapolis, Md. The win was the fourth in a row for the Midshipmen and the third Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference victory of the season.

"Tonight was a good night," head coach Luis Nicolao said. "We were able to play a lot of players and get a lot of people involved in the offense. Ronan (Williams) came up big at goal for us tonight. He had a lot of big saves that helped spark the offense. Although tonight was great, we have to put this one behind us and get ready for two games tomorrow."

Offensively, the Midshipmen had 14 players combine for 19 goals. Andrew Shashin (Buffalo Grove, Ill.) paced the offense with four goals, while Isaac Salinas (Spring City, Pa.) notched a team-high three assists. Bobby Lee (Santa Ana, Calif.) and Declan Harrison (Vista, Calif.) joined Shashin with multiple goals, posting a pair each in the contest. Jake Haines (Ashburn, Va.) also tallied two points scoring a goal and adding an assist.

Defensively, Navy used a trio of goalies to limit La Salle to three goals. Ronan Williams (Severna Park, Md.) posted nine saves in the game for the victory, surrendering one goal per quarter for the first three periods. Francis Kim (Houston, Texas) and Max Sandberg (Newport Beach, Calif.) also saw time with Kim posting a save and Sandberg being credited with four stops.

Navy jumped out to an early lead, finishing the first quarter with a 6-1 advantage. The Mids scored just three goals in the second quarter, but pushed their advantage to 9-2 prior to halftime. In the second half, the Midshipmen outscored the Explorers, 10-1, notching five goals in each of the third and fourth quarters to post the 19-3 victory.

The Mids return to action on Saturday with a pair of Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference games. Navy travels to Baltimore for a 10:00 a.m. game against Johns Hopkins (3-4, 0-1 MAWPC) before returning to Annapolis for a game against No. 15 Bucknell (8-1, 2-0 MAWPC). Both games will be live streamed for free. Pete Medhurst will have the call for Navy against Bucknell on the Patriot League Network.

Defensive Lockdown At Lancer Joust Lifts No. 1 USC To 16-0 Overall

RIVERSIDE, CALIF. — The No. 1 USC men's water polo team added two more dominant wins to its 2018 docket with another victorious day at the Lancer Joust in Riverside, Calif. The Trojans opened Saturday afternoon's efforts with an 18-5 win over Concordia before issuing a complete-game shutout against Redlands with a 14-0 decision that holds USC undefeated on the year with a 16-0 overall record.

The afternoon's adventures began with USC's third faceoff of the year against Concordia. Up to the task once again, the Trojans scored the first 10 goals of the game. Eight different Trojans accounted for those first eight goals before Marko Vavic completed a hat trick to make it a 10-0 USC rally. By halftime, USC gripped an 11-1 lead after Concordia finally broke its silence midway through the second period. Goalie Vaios Vlahotasios went the distance in this one, accumulating seven saves in his second full game as a Trojan. He'd make a stop against a Concordia 5-meter penalty shot in the third to give the Trojan defense an added boost, while the offense poured on five more goals at the other end. Vavic's fourth of the game came early in the third, while Sawyer Rhodes found his second and Luke Wyatt went back-to-back to make it a 15-2 USC advantage. Christian Hockenbury nabbed a steal and would later finish off the frame with his second goal to get USC a 16-3 lead entering the final period. There, Orestis Apergi also netted his second, while Daniel Leong became the 11th Trojan to score to round out a final 18-5 USC win

Minutes later, the Trojans turned around and had another rematch — this one against Redlands for the second meeting between the teams this season. Matt Moran-Flores would take the stage in the cage for the final push, and he'd anchor a defensive shutout through all four frames — USC's first shutout effort since 2016. Along the way, USC had Rhodes lead the pack offensively with his first hat trick as a Trojan. Four other Trojans logged multiple-goal outings as well, with Jake Ehrhardt, James Kolenda and Zach D'Sa plugging in a pair apiece and USC churned out a 14-0 win over Redlands to end its work at the Lancer Joust.

The Trojans now return home to finish off a busy week with a key matchup against No. 5 UC Santa Barbara. USC will host the Gauchos at 1 p.m. tomorrow (Sept. 30) at Uytengsu Aquatics Center.
