STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Wagner College head men’s water polo coach Chris Radmonovich has announced the program’s 2018 schedule, unveiling upwards of 25 matches, which includes five invitationals as well as 12 Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference (MAWPC)-East Region bouts.
The third-year program, which posted a 5-5 conference record and made its first-ever appearance in the MAWPC title match last season, enters the 2018 season with another demanding schedule.
For the third straight year, the Seahawks open the season on Labor Day weekend with three matches at the Navy Tournament in Annapolis, Md. The Green & White will face Salem University and conference foe/tournament host the United States Naval Academy on September 1, before competing against fellow MAWPC-East member and 2018 MAWPC Champion George Washington University on September 2. Wagner went 3-0 against the Midshipmen in 2017, while falling to the Colonials in the MAWPC Championship game, 8-5, on November 19 at Navy.
Radmonovich then takes his squad to New Jersey to compete in the Princeton Invitational at Princeton University on September 7-8. The Seahawks begin the weekend against the University of California-Los Angeles (UCLA) on September 7 and will take on St. Francis College Brooklyn and Brown University on September 8.
From there, the Seahawks will travel to Lewisburg, Pa. to compete in the Bison Invitational at Bucknell University, facing league foe Fordham University on Saturday, September 15, before taking on the University of Toronto in a scrimmage to conclude the day. In 2017, senior captain Ciaran Wolohan scored eight seconds into sudden death overtime to lift Wagner to a thrilling 15-14 come-from-behind victory over Fordham at the Spiro Sports Center. The Seahawks will face Navy once more before taking on new MAWPC-East member the La Salle University Explorers to close out the tournament.
After a midweek showdown with Princeton on September 19, the Seahawks will host George Washington on September 22 for their second matchup of the 2018 campaign. Last year, the two teams battled back and forth on Grymes Hill before the Colonials emerged victorious in a 11-10 win over the Seahawks.
On October 6 and 7, Wagner travels to Pennsylvania for two matches against Bucknell and La Salle before returning to the Spiro Sports Center on October 10 to face the Iona College Gaels.
The following weekend, the Seahawks travel to Cambridge, Mass. for a four-game stint at the Harvard Invitational at Harvard University. After playing Bucknell again on October 13, the Green & White will face Iona for the second time. Wagner will open up Sunday October 14, with a morning matchup against Brown before playing the host Crimson in the afternoon.
The Green & White will challenge New York City rival Fordham in the Bronx on October 17, before flying to the West Coast to face Stanford University on October 19 and compete in the Rodeo Tournament at Santa Clara University.
The Seahawks will end the regular season with matchups against Johns Hopkins University, La Salle, Navy and George Washington before embarking back to the Bronx for the Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference Championship. The opening round will be held on November 16, with the championship game to be played on November 18. The winner of the tournament will receive an automatic bid to the 2018 National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Championship.
